Farm Bill
Fri, 09 May 2008 6:03:18 CDTRepresentatives and Senators, all farm bill conferees, stood side-by-side Thursday afternoon as they gave details of the final Farm Bill conference agreement and praised it as a great Farm Bill for America’s farmers and consumers. North Dakota Representative Earl Pomeroy said - this bill makes a 10.3 billion dollar investment in nutrition programs to help feed the hungriest in our country and those struggling with higher grocery bills. And, he said, - this bill provides a strong safety net in the event of crop failure or price collapse. He called on the President to – join us in supporting this bill. But just moments after negotiators wrapped up their news conference - U.S. Ag Secretary Ed Schafer told reporters the President would veto the bill.
U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, Ranking Republican Member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, said - leaders will seek signatures on the report language from members of the Senate-House Farm Bill Conference Committee this week. Sen. Chambliss championed several provisions in the bill including a measure to exempt IRS-approved education and retirement accounts from counting against the asset limit for food stamps.
He said - this farm bill strengthens our nation’s food security, protects the livelihood of our producers and provides investments in nutrition, conservation and energy. Americans all over the country deserve a new farm bill and we have written a bipartisan and fiscally responsible plan that merits support of the entire Congress.
